HAM Operators and CERT Come Together at the "Head for the Hills" Cedar Hill Bike Rally

Rider Safety is paramount to the objective of the Cedar Hill Rotary "Head for the Hills" Bike Rally on May 12, 2012.

In pursuit of being the safest and most cyclist-centric bike rally in Texas, the Southwest Dallas County Amateur Radio Club and the Best Southwest CERT are coordinating their efforts to assist our Riders.

Both the HAM operators and the CERT members will be running Incident Command out of the Best Southwest CERT Trailer. The trailer will be strategically located in the middle of the Course at Rest Stop 5.

For those unfamiliar with CERT, these emergency response teams help provide critical support by giving immediate assistance to victims, providing damage assessment information, and organizing other volunteers during a disaster. Volunteers trained in CERT also offer a potential workforce for performing duties such as shelter support, crowd control, and evacuation  The role of a CERT volunteer is to help others until trained emergency personnel arrive. At the RALLY, CERT will be available for First-Aid and providing SAG Wagon staging functions for Riders needing to return to the Start/Finish from the Course.

The Southwest Dallas County Amateur Radio Club provides over 20 Licensed Ham Radio Operators providing communications in every part of the four Routes in the Rally. These licensed operators are at each of the 7 Rest Stops and in SAG wagons that are in constant motion watching each detail along the course. All communications are monitored and dispatched through Central Command and Control provided by the Radio Club.

They even have a Licensed HAM operator watching for weather changes throughout the course. Any abrupt changes in the weather can be almost immediately conveyed to the riders through the strategically positioned HAM operators at the Rest Stops and in the SAG wagons.

We are excited to have these well trained and service-minded individuals from these two organizations assisting to the safety of our cyclists.

Recipients of the "Head for the Hills" Bike Rally

The Cedar Hill Rotary Club had the great honor to distribute some of the proceeds from the 2011 "Head for the Hills" Bike Rally

The Club distributed these funds during our regularly scheduled Wednesday morning meeting. Each worthy organization had the opportunity to talk for a moment about how the funds were going to be used. It was incredibly moving. We want to thank, as always, our great volunteers, sponsors, and riders for making this possible.

In this picture, the following organizations were represented. (there will be more donations made by the Cedar Hill Rotary Club throughout the year)

Rotary Club of Cedar Hill would like to thank our dedicated volunteers, our great sponsors, and all of the fantastic riders who came out to support our bike rally.

The Cedar Hill Rotary Club organized the rally to benefit the Food Pantry, Library, Education Foundation and other charitable endeavors, including earthquake victims in Haiti, funding a water well in a remote area of Africa, and donating to the Rotary world-wide effort to eradicate polio in our lifetime.  In 2011, we plan to work with a Rotary Club in Japan to help finance the effort to rebuild that nation.

Albertson’s cookies and bananas, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, therapists from Expressions Chiropractic, and a fresh hamburger made on the spot by Red Robin Restaurant were once again a GINORMOUS hit with our riders. Matt’s Rancho MartinezItalia ExpressWetzel’s Pretzels, and Randy’s Hotdogs all provided a real taste sensation for participating riders.  Professionals like magician David Hira and photographer Scott Keith made our event unique and fun.

The Rotary Club of Cedar Hill invites you to read our reviews at bicycle-stuff.com.  With the able help of the Southwest Dallas County Amateur Radio Club, over 170 volunteers stayed connected – making this one of the safest bike events around. We remain committed to making this the best ride in Texas, and plans are already in the works to make the 2012 ride even better!
